Sarychev Peak Volcano on Matua Island
On 12 June 2009, the Sarychev Peak Volcano on Matua Island in the northwest Pacific Ocean erupted. NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station took this incredible photo as the volcano exploded in a 8-km-high plume of gas that moved 200 km/h and reached temperatures of up to 600ºC.
